Classes
Calligraphy Classes for Adults, that are privately run by the artist, are held at the Phoenix Centre, Sandwich, on Tuesday evenings from 7pm until 9pm. These are suitable for both beginners and students with some experience. The classes run as ten week courses with each one covering a different script style with an associated skill, whether traditional or contemporary, and an optional project. All classes include individual guidance and group demonstrations of skills and techniques. Both historical and related calligraphy references are backed up with handouts and advice is given on materials and equipment with plenty of tips ! Homework is set, and although not compulsory, is aimed to encourage practise of writing or related skills, which is essential for individual development. The classes have a very friendly and informal atmosphere with lots of inspiration !
Private Tuition
One to one tuition is available at the artist's home in Sandwich which is suitable for both beginners and improvers. The sessions are 2 hours and include demonstrations by the tutor, student work time, individual guidance with constructive analysis, advice on materials and photocopied handouts. The sessions are not restricted to a course duration but can be flexible to each student's needs and time based availabiity and can accommodate student's individual subject area preferences, whether it be a particular script style or a concentration on an associated skill such as gold leaf illumination. The cost of the each 2 hour session is £30.
Correspondence
A correspondence course is available in Italics with further scripts styles and skills being available later. The correspondence course is based on 10 weeks with a flexibility to the student as to the turnround with the course being more of a guide. The course introduces the student to setting-up a work station and making the first letter construction strokes using a square nibbed pen, through to writing words/sentences, using a dip-pen and making a simple layout of text. The cost of each course is £220 and includes a demonstration DVD, handouts, constructive analysis sheet and marking of students' worksheets with set homeworking tasks and postage costs.
Private Tuition/Correspondence Combined
There is an opportunity to combine some private sessions with correspondence tuition. This not only offers flexibility for the student but also can be an unlimited duration where the student has the opportunity to choose their own subject area preferences as with private tuition. This is costed at £30 for each 2 hour private tuition session, with inbetween correspondence tuition at £25 for each turnround.
